Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure used to treat a variety of movement disorders and other neurological conditions. A neurosurgeon implants one or more small wires called electrodes into the brain which receive mild electrical stimulation from a small pulse generator (neurostimulator) which has been implanted into the chest. These electrical impulses disrupt the irregular signals in the brain that cause tremors and other movement or neurological symptoms, providing relief to the patient. DBS may not fully resolve such symptoms but can help improve quality of life.
