Understanding Health Conditions
About This Condition
Neuromuscular scoliosis occurs as a result of diseases or disorders of the central nervous system such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, spina bifida or spinal cord injury. These types of conditions can cause muscle weakness, spasticity or paralysis meaning they are unable to support the spine as it grows, leading to curvature of the spine. Neuromuscular scoliosis is the second most common form of the condition.
